Mullacott alpacas Posts
This is a chance for the lovely loyal Mullacott Alpacas subscribers to name one of this year’s cria. I will make a list of all names suggested by subscribers by 5pm (UK time, that’s about 25 hours after this post) on Monday 25th April. It is a big boy. Sire is Domino, dam is Theresa. He is almost all white, but maybe a touch of fawn on his back and top of head (I don’t think it will really show when in full fleece). The name needs to begin with ‘F’. … See MoreSee Less

Giving a glucose enima. This helps give energy and stops a cold cria fitting as it warms, most importantly it doesn’t trigger the clock starting for the colostrum absorption. … See MoreSee Less

When you say that it “stops them fitting” do you mean it keeps them from having a seizure, or from shivering or what? Must be a UK term. Love the care you give them!
What glucose amount to water?
I love seeing the sweet care you give your animals ❤️
Do you make use of heat lamps for the cria??
Thankyou for the details as you apply this procedure. Good health to Baby & Mom.
This is a first for me,learning all the time !! I'm sure he'll be fine with all your knowledgeable TLC 🙏🧡
Sweet fur babies or would it be sweet woolly babies? ! Prayers for all of them!

Thank you for sharing 🥰
Dotty had a stillborn cria today. The vet delivered it and it had some limb deformities, it probably died about 24 hours before she showed signs of labour.
The most likely cause is that mum has been infected by schmallenberg virus. This is spread by midges and affects sheep, cows, alpacas etc in early pregnancy, sometimes causing deformities preventing birth, but also too serious to live with. Other mums-to-be can come into contact with it, without showing any ill effects.
It is spread by infected midges biting the livestock. Luckily we have low levels of midges here (it’s usually too windy!) quite a few livestock farms in our area have been affected, but it is unusual in an alpaca. We won’t be able to tell if other pregnant girls are infected until time to birth.
For other alpaca owners, the signs we spotted of a problem was a full term dam (333 days gestation) rolling a lot, sometimes right over her spine, clearly very uncomfortable, getting up and down. A quick internal exam felt abnormal, hence vet attendance.

Oh my goodness! So sorry to hear that. Thank you for your information and education. Always something to learn! ❤️🙏❤️🙏
I’m so sorry to hear of Dotties loss.So sad and she must feel confused. Will she be able to have another cria normal?x
Thank you for always educating me. It’s a sad loss for all of you.
So sorry and sad for Dotty and the owners, staff, volunteers and community at Mullacott, you give your girls the best of care and so upsetting when this happens.
Aww so sorry Dotty. Will this affect her having Cria in the future? I hope all the Ladies are Healthy
I'm so sorry. It's hard losing them. 😞
Oh that’s sad. I hope Dotty is ok
Oh poor Dotty….. so sorry to hear this…..x
So sorry 🌻💕
So sorry for poor Dotty must be so hard and confusing for her and RIP to her beautiful cria 💔 Does it remain in their system so once infected always affected or is it only when infected in early pregnancy/during initial infection problems occur? Xx 😘 Praying it’s missed the rest of the herd 🤗 Love to all X
Please tell me what a midge is? I’m so very sorry for the loss of this precious baby. Dotty is a pretty girl!
Sorry to hear this. So sad!
Poor darling Dotty. I feel so sad for her. How is she doing and what do you do in times like this…she must be grieving? I’m sure you and Simon feel sad as well
Prayers for you and Dotty!! Hope no one else has been infected!!
Wouldn’t it be nice if your girl who might have twins had them, both were healthy and Dotty was able to feed/raise one.
So sorry for Dottie. She’s probably wondering what happened to her baby. wondering if she can conceive again and if this can happen again. prayers
Is dotty going to be ok? I guess she can't be bred any longer?
So can she be treated and cured?
This is heartbreaking 💔 for you and your Mullacott team, but especially for Dotty. I am so very sorry this happened to her and her cria. 😢 Such a loss. 🙁
Probably inappropriate, but is there something you can give to remove this or will she no longer be able to have a baby??
Oh how sad. This seems to be getting worse. Perhaps the River Authorities should spray the rivers to stop midges!
So what happens to her now, will she need to take medication?
How very sad ! Is there no hope of a vaccine yet???
Very sorry to hear! This is another condition I was unaware of. Midges is the same as mosquitoes in the US ? We have quite a few in Texas!
That virus has caused alot of issues this year. Is there no vaccine for it or a preventative measure !?

Toddlers like to run around before bedtime, too, don’t they, and so does my puppy. They work out that last bit of energy and it helps them get to sleep. The are so beautiful and precious.
I believe they are very Happy & Excited! Our Great Dane did Zoomies. That is what the Vet said why."Happy & Excited. Horses Alpacas. Dogs. Will see something that strikes their fancy.
We used to have even older alpaca get the zoomies at dusk. I have no idea why?

Biscotti is doing well. Feeds at 10pm, 2am and 6.30am, but also feeding off mum. I’ll tell you more on the blood tests another day. Biscotti’s reading was great – no need for a transfusion. (I filmed this before Cocktail was born, but thought you’d like to see both videos) … See MoreSee Less

Latest Arrivals
Our cria (baby alpacas) are usually born between April and June. I am keeping our Facebook page (Mullacott Alpacas) up to date with news and photos. Please have a look and like us! Have a look at our new arrivals, find out how they got their names and check back for photos of them as they develop. They will be weaned once they reach five to six months of age and can then go to new homes.
Appaloosa alpacas are relatively rare, with Leopard Appaloosa being one of the rarest colour patterns of all. Mullacott Alpacas has four different gene lines and so has an exciting breeding program of mating Leopard and Harlequin Appaloosas to other Leopard and Harlequin appaloosas.

About Us
We have owned alpacas since 1997 and moved to Lower Mullacott Farm in 2002, from Martinslade in Wiltshire, when the alpacas outgrew our smallholding there. We have fully renovated the farmhouse and it is now rented out in the summer as a 5* Holiday Home (High View Farmhouse). Our visitors love to hand feed the alpacas and sometimes even give them a cuddle.
