Our Mums

Our female alpacas stay with us for many years, often their entire life. These females make up the majority of the herd and most will have a cria most years. We will normally mate a youngster after her 2nd winter, but occasionally, if she has already reached 14 months of age and 50kg in weight, she may be mated earlier.

We start our Matings at the beginning of May and end in early July, resulting in Mid April to June cria. (Gestation is 11-11.5 months) Reasons for not re-mating a female may be to give her some recovery time from a difficult birth,  if her body condition is too low (she will be feeding her current cria for the first 6 months of a new pregnancy if re-mated) or age.
