He's beautiful!! I love his name! Now, the "V" name should be Vercase!
Mullacott Alpacas I have lost track, but it seems virtually all newborn cria are males thus far – this seems high odds from 7 – or am I mixing up the gender of several?
Congratulations! Love his name!
Beautiful š» loving seeing all the newborns and hearing their names.

In alpacas is there a matriarch who is the primary alarmed and protector or do they all assume that duty. It's interesting that the cria instinctual know to go the the back, or middle, for protection. Nature is amazing.
They are a noisy bunch. Would the reaction be different if you had called out their names.
No doubt it’s the dogs, even though they know them, but now on a different path it is a different context. Can’t be too careful, especially with cria in the herd, so sound the alarm!
They are so funny,bless.x
How interesting! They sure were on High Alert! If you hadn’t mentioned the sounds they make, I would have thought there were some sort of birds in the area. Amazing!
Thanks for sharing this interesting situation. If you had moved much closer would they have recognized you and settled down?
I follow a farm page here in the states that has alpacas and three anatolian shepherd LGDs. All three dogs recognize that call, and come running to protect the herd. Raventree Ranch is the page.
It kind of sounds like birds to me. Are they alerting to you? You said you haven't come from that direction in a long time. They don't understand….It's ok ā¤š¤
Another information of the behavior of alpacas. Their alert position is impressive, collegial and at the same time very beautiful. They are amazing and I love them. š¤š
Such a different sound. Seems like mother nature made it so, so it would really stand out and put them on high alert. Interesting to hear.
Amazing to see in a group. I don’t get to see that with my pet boys
Sounds like seagulls! lol. They are looking at u like what r u doing over there
They are so protective. They put their children under their protection. love them
They sound like a flock of seagulls! Very interesting to learn about this instinctual reaction to the possibility of danger.
That is amazing. The babies all going to the rear and the non pregnant girls going into the front. The alarm calls sound like warning calls from hawks to me. Amazing
Almost sounds like a hawk
Walking through them?! Good luck and stay safe!!!
How noble of them ! I never knew this…..very interesting! Maternal instinct is amazing! Thanks for posting!
Kinda sounds like a Guinea fowl.
Brilliant šš
Wonderful information!
What was going on….?
That's just wonderful
Interesting…. great to see…
Thanks for another teaching moment.
With extra text from Sarah, the vet.
I recently did a birthing refresher for the Cornwall Camelid Association ahead of the unpacking season. We discussed the use of glucose enemas in lethargic, hypothermic cria. The process of giving the enema is demonstrated in this video at Mullacott Alpacas, and you can see how great the response can be!
Why a glucose enema?
1. Cria have naturally high glucose levels compared to other species so we need to take care when supplementing – an enema will provide energy that can be used during the warming process that reduces the risk of seizing, without elevating blood levels beyond safe levels.
2. The warm water aids as another means to warm the body and support recovery. It also acts as a āshock therapyā to wake the cria.
3. Any liquid given orally will initiate the sloughing of special cells in the gut. These are present in newborns to uptake antibodies from the colostrum. The optimal period for uptake of these antibodies is in the 1st 6 hours of life so we need to reserve that first feed for the quality colostrum – these weaker cria will often need longer to gain their strength and suck reflex so we want to maximise this time.
4. Itās easy to do! A rubber stomach tube for lambs works great. Make sure you label this as your enema equipment!!
5. Itās cheap. Powdered or liquid glucose mixed 50:50 with warm water given at 10-20ml is all you need. A lot of the solution will come back out which is fine.
One of my clients who has been using this for a few years refers to it as āthe Billy b*****sā!! I use it in our lambs too and have great success. So if you have a weaker cria, give it a go!

Latest Arrivals
Our cria (baby alpacas) are usually born between April and June. I am keeping our Facebook page (Mullacott Alpacas) up to date with news and photos. Please have a look and like us! Have a look at our new arrivals, find out how they got their names and check back for photos of them as they develop. They will be weaned once they reach five to six months of age and can then go to new homes.
Appaloosa alpacas are relatively rare, with Leopard Appaloosa being one of the rarest colour patterns of all. Mullacott Alpacas has four different gene lines and so has an exciting breeding program of mating Leopard and Harlequin Appaloosas to other Leopard and Harlequin appaloosas.

About Us
We have owned alpacas since 1997 and moved to Lower Mullacott Farm in 2002, from Martinslade in Wiltshire, when the alpacas outgrew our smallholding there. We have fully renovated the farmhouse and it is now rented out in the summer as a 5* Holiday Home (High View Farmhouse). Our visitors love to hand feed the alpacas and sometimes even give them a cuddle.
